  • Description

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S CALL FOR NEUTRALIZATION OF INDO-CHINA HAS SPARKED OFF A SERIES OF ANTI-FRENCH DEMONSTRATIONS IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

STUDENTS, CLAIMING THAT SOUTH VIETNAM IS THREATENED BY FRENCH "COLLUSION" WITH CHINA, HAVE DEMANDED THAT ALL FRENCH PROPERTY IN THE COUNTRY BE NATIONALISED, THE SEVERANCE OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH FRANCE, CLOSURE OF FRENCH SCHOOLS, AND AN ATTACK OF NORTH VIETNAM.

THEY HAVE HELD SEVERAL DEMONSTRATIONS AT THE MASSIVE FRENCH WAR MEMORIAL IN THE CENTRE OF SAIGON. ON TUESDAY THEY DRAGGED DOWN SOME OF THE BRONZE FIGURES ATOP THE 12 METRE (40 FOOT) MONUMENT AND DEFACED THE SIDES.

NOW THE STATUE HAS BEEN REMOVED BY SOUTH VIETNAMESE SOLDIERS TO PREVENT FURTHER UGLY SCENES IN THE CHIEN SI SQUARE.

THE FRENCH EMBASSY, SACKED LAST WEEK BY STUDENTS, IS NOW SURROUNDED BY BARBED WIRE AND BARRICADES AGAINST FURTHER ATTACKS.
