  • Description

England's bowlers dismissed India for a meagre 155 runs in their first innings of the second test match between the two countries in Calcutta. Fast bowlers Bob Willis and Chris Old cleaned up the last of the Indian batsman on Sunday (2 January) but the English batsmen had their own problems on the turning Eden Gardens pitch when they started their first innings.

SYNOPSIS: Willis began the final rout when he clean bowled Prasana.

At this stage India were 8-147 and their captain Bishan Bedi came to the wicket. He didn't last long before being caught off the bowling of Chris Old.

It was Willis who ended the Indian innings when he shattered the stumps, with Chandra at the crease and India were all out for 155.

England were soon in trouble themselves when Bedi started to spin the ball on the crumbling pitch. Graham Barlow had a lucky escape when Solkar dropped a difficult chance.

Mike Brearley wasn't so lucky and fell victim to Bedi off a similar chance, which Solkar held this time.

Eventually Derek Randall, who went on the make 37, stopped a possible collapse with some firm hitting. England finished the day at 4-136.
