  • Description

Remembrance services for President Ngo dinh Diem, the South Vietnamese leader who was killed in a military coup ten years ago, were held in Signor Cathedral on Friday (November 2nd). The former leader has been remembered in recent years as a martyr in the cause of Vietnamese freedom.

At the time of the military coup, President Diem had assumed dict???ial powers. He was accused of allowing widespread corruption in his government, and favouring the country's Catholics at the expense of the Irge Bhuddist population. He was buried in an unmarked grave.

President Diem was a devout Catholic, and the anniversary of his death brought out fellow Catholics in force to attend a High Mass at Saigon Cathedral. Youth groups danced in the streets and later paraded to the cemetery. A memorial tower, built for the occasion, carried a photograph of the dead president. Wreaths were laid at the foot of the tower, while a large crowd joined in prayers led by a priest.
