    THE NIGERIAN AUTHORITIES HAVE STARTED A NATION-WIDE DRIVE AGAINST SMALLPOX. IN A BID TO BANISH THE SCOURGE EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY IS TO BE VACCINATED. PILOT SCHEMES ARE DESIGNED TO GIVE THE HEALTH AUTHORITIES A BLUEPRINT FOR THE TASK AHEAD.

    MAROKO VILLAGE IN LAGOS WAS CHOSEN FOR ONE OF THE PILOT SCHEMES. IT HAS A POPULATION OF 15,000, MANY OF WHOM TRAVEL TO WORK IN OTHER PARTS OF LAGOS, AND OFFICIALS AIM TO FIND OUT IF THE POPULATION CAN BE VACCINATED WITHOUT UNDUE DISRUPTION OF THE NORMAL PATTERN OF LIFE.

    APART FROM THE SMALLPOX CAMPAIGN ALL CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF SIX MONTHS AND THREE YEARS OLD ARE TO BE VACCINATED AGAINST MEASLES. A JET INJECTOR, CAPABLE OF VACCINATING 800 PEOPLE AN HOUR, IS BEING USED.

    THE CAMPAIGN BEGAN IN MAROKO VILLAGE ON MONDAY, (FEBRUARY 6, 1967), AND IN THE FIRST HOUR 433 PEOPLE WERE VACCINATED. THE CAMPAIGN IS DIRECTED BY THE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH.
