  • Description

President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania arrived in India yesterday (January 22) from the Singapore Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference for an eight day state visit. He was greeted at Palam Airport, Delhi by President Varahgiri Giri, Vice-President Gopal Pathal, cabinet ministers and diplomats.

Mr. Nyerere, on his first official visit to India, will be the most senior foreign dignitary at Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday (January 26). Today (January 23), he was due to meet Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Ghandi, who was on a campaign tour for the March general election when he arrived.

Among crowds who greeted him at the airport were Indian girl students in national costume who threw flowers on a red carpet in his path, and Tanzanian children who received a pat on the head from the President.

Before leaving Singapore Mr. Nyerere told Indian journalists there that India stood by African countries on the arms sales to South Africa issue.

At the airport, replying to a welcome speech by President Giri, he said his first visit to India had been delayed too long. Tanzania had received great inspiration from India's freedom struggle, he said, and believed it possible to learn from its experiences and endeavours since independence. He also said he had come to indicate Tanzania's warm feelings of friendship with India, and was looking forward to useful discussions with Indian Government leaders.
