  • Description

THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION IN BRITAIN, MR EDWARD HEATH, TODAY (MONDAY) HAD A MEETING LASTING HALF AN HOUR WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AT THE ELYSEE PALACE IN PARIS. MR HEATH, ON A TWO-DAY VISIT TO THE FRENCH CAPITAL, SAID AFTER THE MEETING HE BELIEVED HE HAD A FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE WAY EUROPE WAS GOING TO DEVELOP.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME MR HEATH HAD MET PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SINCE 1961. MR HEATH ALSO HAD DISCUSSIONS WITH THE FRENCH PRIME MINISTER, M. POMPIDOU, AT L'HOTEL MATIGNON, THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, BEFORE HIS MEETING WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE.

MR HEATH DID NOT DISCLOSE THE NATURE OF HIS TALKS WITH PRESIDENT DE GAULLE. HE HAS SAID THAT IF HIS CONSERVATIVE PARTY IS RETURNED TO POWER IT WILL TAKE THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET. MR HEATH LED THE ABORTIVE NEGOTIATIONS FOR BRITISH ENTRY TO THE MARKET IN 1963, WHEN FRANCE BLOCKED THE MOVE. HE LATER TOLD NEWSMEN AT A LUNCHEON THAT WHETHER OR NOT BRITAIN ENTERED THE COMMON MARKET, IT WAS IN BRITAIN'S INTERESTS THAT THE ORGANISATION SHOULD DEVELOP.
