Background: In a major reshuffle of the top leadership in the People's Republic of the Congo on Thursday (16 December), Major Alfred Raoul was dropped from the office of Vice-president.
M. Eoloise Moudileno-Massengo, Minister of Justice, replaced him in the Vice-Presidency while continuing to hold the Justice portfolio, and M. Dieudonne Mahoungou took over Major Raoul's Ministry of Commerce.
The country's Ministry of Information was abolished and its functions taken over by a new Propaganda Commission of the political Bureau of the ruling Congo Labour Party.
Some 50 party members were expelled or suspended on grounds which included practising fetishism or occult sciences, insufficient ideological knowledge and misconduct towards the revolution.
