Background: Nigeria's President Olusegun Obasandjo arrived in Niger on Sunday (17 July) for a day of talks with the Head of State Seyni Kountche. The talks centred around bilateral relations and African affairs.

SYNOPSIS: At the airport in the capital, Niamey, President Obasandjo was greeted by President Kountche and numerous government ministers. He was accompanied on his visit by his Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Economic development and Mines and Energy.

Part of the welcoming ceremony was the traditional drinking of "Donou" -- which symbolises fraternity and friendship between the two countries. President Obasandjo also inspected a guard of honour.

After the official welcome was over the two leaders began their talks. A joint communique later said the two nations were satisfied with the efforts being made to consolidate their joint frontiers and to maintain joint peace and harmony.

The two men discussed the recommendations of a Niger-Nigerian commission established earlier this year to investigate transport routes and communications. They also expressed their support for the liberation movements "confronted by the racist regimes of southern Africa."
