    Background: NEW DELHI, INDIA

Celebrations were held in New Delhi, India, to mark the country's Republic Day. India proclaimed itself a republic 34 years ago, and the parade, on January 26, included a military march past and display of weapons. President Shehu Shagari of Nigeria was the main guest, and he was accompanied by President Zail Singh, who took the salute. Mr. Shagari was on a three-day visit. Talks he held with Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi included trade and technology. India has provided the expertise for Nigeria's army and railways, and officials said there was scope for further economic co-operation. Mr. Shagari's visit came at a time when India is trying to improve her foreign relations. In March, New Delhi will host the third conference of the world's Non-Aligned Nations. India also, in 1981, undertook an extensive policy of establishing diplomatic relations with China, which had suffered a setback after India recognised the Heng Samrin government of Kampuchea in 1980. India remained a member of the British Commonwealth after independence. Mr. Shagari was due to leave for Pakistan on January 28.
