  • Description

A man who vanished from Germany after being charged with participating in thousands of Nazi killings left Buenos Aires, Argentina Friday (11 Nov) on his way back to West Germany to stand trial.

He was 64-year old Doctor Gerhard Bohne who was charged with being a leader of the German mercy killing program, in which an estimated 200,000 persons died. Bohne is the last of four men originally scheduled to go on trial at Limburg, West Germany, in 1964.

On arrival in West Germany, he was taken to Butzbach prison to await trial. Specifically, he will be charged with complicity in the murder of at least 15,000 mentally ill and physically deformed persons during the Nazi regime. The murder program was carried out to make room for wounded World War Two German soldiers. Na trial date was set.

Bohne, who is now said to be suffering from cancer, claims that he was only following orders of the German High Command during World War II.

Doctor Werner Hoyde, the chief defendant and onetime medical director of the Mercy Killing program, committed suicide in his prison cell in February, 1964 while awaiting trial. Another defendant, Friedrich Tillmann, who was not in custody, fell to his death from an eighth floor window the day before Hoyde hung himself.

The only defendant available for the trial opening on February 18, 1964 was Hans Hefelmann, a one-time Nazi functionary. His trial was stopped on grounds that he was suffering from rapidly advancing senility at the age of 58.

Doctor Bohne was returned to Germany from Argentina under terms of an extradition agreement. He had been jailed for two years and nine months in Buenos Aires' Devoto Prison.
