TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 9: SADAT: "As I have stated yesterday, I had great concern. Today, thank God, there is great improvement, really, and the team of French and egyptian doctors are seeing to it that everything is under control, and there may be no need to a new operation. But, even if it takes place, it is a minor one."

NEWSMAN: "Did he talk to you?"

    SADAT: "Who"

    NEWSMAN: "The Shah."

SADAT: Well, I have stayed on hour with him--yes?"

NEWSMAN: "What kind of operation, Sir, will he have to take?"

SADAT: "Well, as I told you, it is a minor one, but I'm not really a specialist in this branch."

NEWSMAN: "Can you tell us what is wrong with him, Sir?"

    SADAT: "I beg your pardon?"

NEWSMAN: "Mr. President, can you tell us what is the condition of the Shah, what is wrong with him? Is it the cancer again?"

SADAT: "No, no, no, no, as I told you yesterday it started with pneumonia."

    NEWSMAN: "What is it now?"

SADAT: "Well, some complications, I can't really--I don't know, or it's not my branch of specialisation. But, as I told you, even if the operation is done, if the doctors agree to this operation, it will be a minor one."

Background: The ex-Shah of Iran is recovering from minor surgery in the intensive care unit of a Cairo military hospital. Reuters news agency quoted hospital sources as saying the operation involved inserting a pipe into the pleural sac surrounding his lung, and draining out pus. On the Shah's orders, no medical bulletins have been issued. Word on his condition has been given by the Shah's host, President Anwar Sadat. He crammed this duty into a heavy schedule which included meeting the West German opposition leader, Herr Franz Joseph Strauss.

SYNOPSIS: The Shah had been lying seriously ill at Maadi Military Hospital since Friday (27 June). He's had cancer of the lymphatic system for years.

President Sadat, flew in to visit the ailing ex-monarch. The hospital is heavy guarded, with newsmen minutely searched at checkpoints.

Affairs of state have kept President sadat busy at his villa in Giza, near Cairo. He spoke formally with Herr Strauss, a right-wing Bavarian, who is contesting the West German chancellorship against Chancellor Helmut Schmidt. President Sadat had invited Herr Strauss for talks on European and international affairs.

Newsmen were anxious to hear a first-hand report on the Shah just before his operation.
