    South Africa took a winning 3.0 lead in the South American zone Davis Cup Tennis tie against Brazil on Saturday (15 December).

    Bob Hewitt and Frew McMillan clinched the South African victory when they beat Thomas Koch and Edson Mandarino, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 in the men's doubles.

    On Friday (14th December) Cliff Dryadale and Bob Hewitt won both their singles matches to take their country on to a commanding lead in the competition. Hewitt beat Koch 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

    Earlier, Drysdale, who's 32, took almost one and a half hours to defeat Mandarino. The Brazilian, who's also 32, started the game with some aggressive play. After a spirited first set, Drysdale took command, and dominated the rest of the match. He went on to win 6-3, 6-0, 6-2.

    South Africa goes on to play Ecuador in the next round of the competition.

    SYNOPSIS: South Africa met Brazil at the Carrasco Tennis Club in Montevideo on Friday. Cliff Drysdale of South Africa played Brazilian Edsen Mandarino in the men's singles on the first day of the qualifying tie in the South American zone of the Davis Cup competition. The game began with some aggressive play by Mandarino.

    After a spirited first set, the South African player who's thirty two, settled down, and quickly took command of the game. The South African team was to dominate the competition during the two days of play.

    Mandarino teamed up on the following day with Thomas Koch for the men's doubles. They lost to the South African team of Hewitt and Frew McMillan. In this match, Drysdale took almost one and a half hours to defeat his Brazilian opponent six-three,six-o, six-two.

    With the defeat of Brazil in both doubles and singles matches, South Africa took a three-nil lead in the competition. It will meet Ecuador in the next match.
