  • Description

"Skyhook Glynco" - plastic balloon as high as a 50-storey building, ten million cubic feet in volume and carrying an 800lb tube of soil emulsion film - designed to record the energy of cosmic ray particles - was released at Brunswick, Georgia, USA, June 5.

Planes and ground recovery crews are tracking the 2 1/2 ton balloon by radar as it drifts slowly westward at a height approaching 115,000ft, on a radio-controlled course; when sufficient data has been recorded the flight will be terminated by one of the shadowing planes; a gondola will be released from the balloon, which is expected to disintegrate as the gondola parachutes to earth.

"Glynco" represents combined efforts by scientists of 13 nations.
