  • Description

Farmers and businessmen in the Queensland town of Wandoon, on Friday, called on the state government to declare their district a disaster area, after what they say is the worst mouse plague in the state's history.

The Queensland government has offered grain growers 2,000 dollars(about 930 sterling) each to help rebuild and replant fields after mice ate the crops. But some farmers say the amount of money is not enough.

Overall, the plague of millions of mice has been blamed for the loss of grain and goods for export and home consumption totalling some five-million dollars in the past twelve months.

Further south, at Newcastle, twenty-four steel workers walked out, after having been chased off the job for four days by mice.
