  • Description

After 43 year's service in the French Army, General Jean-Etienne Valluy relinquished his post as commander in Chief of Allied Forces Central Europe at a farewell ceremony at Shape May 11. The post is to go now to French General Maurice Challe, Commander in Chief of French Forces in Algeria at the time of the Algiers revolt early this year.

At the ceremony, British General Sir Richard Gale deputised for General Lauris Norstad, Supreme Commander, recovering from an indisposition.

A citation to General Valluy paid tribute to his outstanding and devoted services to Nato. The General served Nato for eight years.

Among those at the ceremony were Nato Secretary-General Paul Henri Spaak of Belgium, German General Hans Speidel, Commander of Land Forces in Central Europe, and Marshal Juin, France's only living Marshal.
