A MASS DISPLAY AT DAR-ES-SALAAM'S NATIONAL STADIUM, WITH PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE AS GUEST OF HONOUR, BROUGHT TANZANIA'S SABA SABA DAY CELEBRATIONS TO A CLIMAX YESTERDAY (7 JULY).

THE DISPLAY CAME AFTER WEEK-LONG CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE DAY (7 JULY) WHEN THE RULING TANGANYIKA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (TANU) WAS FOUNDED FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.

PRESIDENT NYERERE, AND VISITING ZAMBIAN VICE-PRESIDENT SIMON KAPWEPWE, WATCHED 6,000 SCHOOLCHILDREN AND MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES GIVING DISPLAYS ILLUSTRATING THE THEME 'TANZANIA FORGES AHEAD'.

IN GYMNASTIC AND CALISTHENIC EXHIBITIONS AT THE STADIUM CHILDREN MIMED NATION-BUILDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIELDS OF AGRICULTURE, EDUCATION AND POLITICS.

ENTHUSIASTIC CROWDS SAW TROOPS PERFORMING ARMY DRILL, AND LATER A SPLENDID MARCH-PAST. AIR FORCE PLANE PILOTED BY TANZANIAN PILOTS AND THEIR CANADIAN AIR FORCE INSTRUCTORS FLEW OVERHEAD.

MESSAGES OF CONGRATULATION ON TANU'S ANNIVERSARY HAVE BEEN FLOODING IN FROM FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS AND FROM FREEDOM-FIGHTING MOVEMENTS, WHO HAVE FOUND SANCTUARY IN TANZANIA.

THE CELEBRATIONS WILL CONTINUE TODAY (8 JULY) WITH SINGING AND DANCING COMPETITIONS, A FOOTBALL MATCH, AND THE OPENING BY PRESIDENT NYERERE OF THE NEW HEADQUARTERS OF THE BANK OF TANZANIA.
