COMMANDING THE JAPANESE FLOTILLA WAS ADMIRAL SHUSRIRO OHKAWA, ON BOARD THE DESTROYER "AKUZIKI". THE OTHER JAPANESE VESSELS WERE THE "URANAMI", "AYANAMI" AND "HARUSAME."
BEFORE SAILING INTO VALPARAISO, THE SHIPS CALLED AT THE NORTHERN PORT OF TONGOY, AND TOOK PART IN MANOUVRES WITH CHILEAN WARSHIPS.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE TWO NAVIES HAD COMBINED IN A JOINT NAVAL EXERCISE.

WHILE AT VALPARAISO, ADMIRAL OHKAWA LAID A WREATH AT THE MONUMENT TO THE CHILEAN NAVY, AND LATER WATCHED A MARCH-PAST OF JAPANESE AND CHILEAN SAILORS.
