  • Description

CANADIANS GO TO THE POLLS ON APRIL 8 TO ELECT A NEW GOVERNMENT.POLITICIANS ARE NOW BUSY CAMPAIGNING THEIR ELECTORATES.THE CANADIAN PARLIAMENT WAS DISSOLVED ON FEBRUARY 6 FOLLOWING TWO "NO CONFIDENCE" VOTES AGAINST MR.JOHN DIEFENBAKER'S PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE (MODERATE RIGHT-WING) GOVERNMENT.

THE ISSUE THAT TOPPLED THE GOVERNMENT WAS MR.DIEFENBAKER'S REFUSAL TO ACCEPT AMERICAN NUCLEAR WARHEADS ON CANADIAN SOIL.IT ALSO CAUSED THE RESIGNATION OF THREE CABINET MINISTERS.TWO OTHERS RESIGNED FOR "PERSONAL REASONS".

MR.DIEFENBAKER CAME TO POWER IN JUNE 1957, WITH A MINORITY ADMINISTRATION.IN THE GENERAL ELECTION IN MARCH 1958, HIS GOVERNMENT SWEPT BACK WITH THE BIGGEST VOTE IN CANADA'S HISTORY, WINNING 208 OF THE 265 SEATS.HOWEVER, LAST JUNE, HIS PARTY LOST HEAVILY, RETAINING ONLY 115 SEATS WITH TWO SPLINTER PARTIES HOLDING THE BALANCE OF POWER.

HIS CHIEF OPPOSITION IN THE APRIL GENERAL ELECTION IS EXPECTED FROM THE LIBERALS, LED BY MR.LESTER PEARSON.

UP UNTIL NOW, MR.DIEFENBAKER HAS DISCLAIMED ANY ANTI-AMERICANISM, BUT HE DISPLAYED IT STRONGLY IN HIS OPENING CAMPAIGN SPEECH IN TORONTO YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).
