  • Description

AT A CEREMONY AT THE WILSON AIRPORT IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) THE EAST AFRICAN FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE RECEIVED ITS THIRD AEROPLANE - A CHEROKEE 235 AIRCRAFT. IT WAS PRESENTED BY MR. ARTHUR GODFREY OF THE AMERICAN COLUMBIA BROADCASTING SYSTEM WHOSE TELEVISION PROGRAMME CHOOSES CERTAIN CHARITIES TO BENEFIT FROM DONATIONS SENT TO THE COMPANY. THIS TIME IT WAS THE EAST AFRICAN FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE WHICH BENEFITTED IN THE FORM OF A PLANE VALUED AT GBP28,000.

RECEIVING THE LOG BOOKS AND KEYS ON BEHALF OF THE SERVICE WAS THE KENYAN MINISTER OF HEALTH, DR. NJUROGI MUNGAI.

THE EAST AFRICAN FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE, BASED ON THE FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK MEDICAL UNIT, WAS FOUNDED IN KENYA IN FEBRUARY 1961 AND THE FOLLOWING YEAR A RADIO-TELEPHONE NETWORK WAS INSTALLED TO HELP IN THE MORE EFFICIENT RUNNING OF THE ORGANISATION.

THE NEW AIRCRAFT JOINS A PIPER AZTEC, ALSO A GIFT FROM ARTHUR GODFREY ENTERPRISES AND ANOTHER PIPER CHEROKEE. THE ADVANTAGES OF THE NEW AIRCRAFT ARE MANY IN A TERRITORY OF SUCH WIDELY SCATTERED COMMUNITIES AS THAT SERVED BY THE FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE. IT CAN CRUISE AT 150 M.P.H. FOR 7 HOURS WITHOUT REFUELLING - A VITAL FACTOR IN SERVING DISTANT MISSION STATIONS WHERE NO REFUELLING FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE. THE CHEROKEE IS ONE OF THE FEW AEROPLANES EVER APPROVED TO CARRY A USEFUL LOAD IN EXCESS OF ITS OWN EMPTY WEIGHT.

A VALUABLE AID TO A SERVICE WHICH HAS ONLY ONE DOCTOR FOR EVERY THIRTY THOUSAND PEOPLE.
