  • Description

Mozambique President Samora Machel arrived in Finland on Monday (2 May) to complete an official tour of Scandinavia.

SYNOPSIS: The Finnish and Mozambique flags were flying side by side when President Machel arrived at Helsinki airport. Finland is an avowed supporters of black nationalist movements in southern Africa. President Machel, a former guerrilla leader, is accompanied on his tour by Foreign Minister Alberto Chissano and Trade Minister Maria Da Graca Machungo. They were greeted by Finnish Acting Premier Ahti Karjalainen.

While in Finland President Machel will have talks with the government on mutual and international affairs. On Tuesday (3 May) he and his delegation were due to meet President Urho Kekkonen, the 76-year-old leader responsible for the country's foreign policy. Finland and other Scandinavian states already support a number of aid projects in East Africa and have previously supplied Mozambique with small-scale financial aid. Mozambique is one of the frontline states that support the Patriotic Front of Mr Joshua Nkomo and Mr Robert Mugabe in its struggle to topple the white minority government in the breakaway British colony Rhodesia. Finland, however, has not declared whether it backs the Patriotic Front or Bishop Abel Muzorewa's United African National Council on the Rhodesia issue. The Bishop was in Finland earlier this year.
