French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre visited leftwing revolutionary Andreas Beader in Stuttgart's maximum security Stammheim prison on Wednesday (4 December).

The 69-year-old existentialist said he wanted to learn Baader's political views.

Baader is a convicted arsonist and is the alleged co-leader of the so-called Baader-Meinhof urban guerrilla group. He has also been held in pre-trial custody since 1972 on further charges connected with the urban guerrilla group's activities.

Forty members of the group, which also takes its name from woman ???ournalist Ulrike Meinhof, are detained in West Germany awaiting trial. Meinhof has recently been jailed for eight years for attempted murder. She was flown to the Stammheim prison on Monday (2 December).

After his meeting with Baader, M. Sartre told newsmen that conditions for urtan guerrillas in West Germany were interned to make them unable to defend themselves, driver them mad or let them die. He said that Badder -- who had been on hunger strike for 84 days -- looked like " a tortured man spoiled by hunger."
