  • Description

Efforts to promote technical cooperation among developing countries in Africa received added impetus this week (4-8 October) through a regional meeting taking place in Ethiopia.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was held at Africa Hall in Addis Ababa. Mr. Abde Aziz Jamai, Morocco's Ambassador to Ethiopia, was the chairman, and the meeting was organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). High-level government officials from all over Africa came to the meeting as well as representatives of major regional institutions and international organisations. It is the first time these three groups have come together to discuss ways of increasing the amount of technical cooperation.

According to the United Nations Development programme the meeting was expected to arrive at specific recommendations to be followed by African countries, both on their own and through the United Nations system. The recommendations are aimed at increasing cooperation in development ventures among African countries, and other developing countries.

Such cooperation is increasingly important for developing countries because it helps them mobilise their untapped resources. The United Nations Development programme will hold similar meetings in other parts of the developing world this year, as a preliminary to a world conference in Argentina in August 1977.
