  • Description

It shows the presentation Sunday, 23 May, at the Poetry Center of the Young Men's Hebrew Association in New York City, where Dylan Thomas was first introduced to America in the early 1950s, of a bronze death mask of the late poet to Actor Richard Burton, who accepted it on behalf of the Wales National Museum at Cardiff. Presentation was by Paul Jenkins, an artist, who donated the mask. The mask was cast in bronze from the original plaster by sculptors David Slivka and Ibram Lassaw.

Burton read two of Thomas's poems and talked about him. There were also remarks by Philip Burton, Richard Burton's foster father, a director of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Also participating was Nancy Wickwire, who was in the first performance of Thomas's Under Milkwood in 1953. Another participant was John Malcolm Brinnin, director of the Poetry Center, who brought Thomas to America.
