  • Description

Celebrations started today (Monday) near Eisenach in East Germany, to mark the 900th anniversary of Wartburg Castle. The Chairman of the East German National Advisory Council spoke at the start of the celebration.

The Advisory Council chairman, Dr Correns, who addressed people gathered in the Castle for the start of the celebrations, pointed out that its 900th anniversary also coincided with the 450th anniversary of the German Protestant Reformation.

In May, 1521, Martin Luther was taken to Wartburg Castle for his own safety, and during the 10 months he spent there, completed his translation of the New Testament.

The castle, once the home of St Elizabeth of Hungary, was immortalized in Wagner's "Tannhauser" as the place where the minstrels' contest took place in 1207.
