  • Description

The Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, met forty-one editors of small and medium sized newspapers and periodicals on Wednesday (9 July), who called on her at government buildings in New Delhi to express their support of the state of emergency declaration and the imposition of censorship.

Led by the Vice Chairman of the Metropolitan Council of Delhi, Mr. Jag Pravesh, the editors presented the prime Minister with a memorandum.

Mrs. Gandhi told the delegation that she emphatically denied that she was hyper-sensitive to criticism. If she had been, she said, she would not have tolerated the kind of criticism which a had been levelled against her over the past two years.

She did admit, however, that she was sensitive to undue criticism of the country and its development programmes. She said that a large section of the Press had identified itself with the Opposition and was trying to undermine the nation's confidence by presenting a distorted picture of the country. The role of the Press should be to give construction criticism.
