ALL WAS QUIET IN THE SIKKIM TOWN OF GANGTOK YESTERDAY AS TENSION CONTINUED ON THE NEARBY BORDER WITH THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. AND THE MAHARAJAH OF SIKKIM HAS BEEN WARMLY RECEIVED FOR HIS VISIT TO INDIAN TROOPS INVOLVED IN THE SHELLING AT THE FRONT.

ONLY THE PREVIOUS DAY THE CHINESE HAD BROADCAST A WARNING TO THE INDIANS THAT AIRCRAFT WOULD "ANNIHILATE EVERY INDIAN OFFICER AND SOLIDER ON THE BORDER" UNLESS THE FIRING STOPPED. BUT AN INDIAN DEFENCE MINISTRY SPOKESMAN DENIED PROVOCATION AND SAID THAT CHINESE VERSIONS OF THE INCIDENTS WERE "COMPLETELY GARDLED."
