  • Description

CROWDS IN SUKARNAPURA, CAPITAL OF WEST IRAN (FORMERLY WEST NEW GUINEA), SHOUTED "WE WANT TO GO BACK" WHEN INDONESIA'S FOREIGN SECRETARY, MR. ADAM MALIK, ASKED THEM IF THEY WANTED INDONESIA TO REJOIN THE UNITED NATIONS. THE RESPONSE CAME WHEN THE FOREIGN SECRETARY ADDRESSED CROWDS LAST WEEK DURING SAKARNAPURA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS.

MR. MALIK FLEW TO WEST IRIAN FOLLOWING REPORTS OF UNREST THERE. IN A SERIES OF MASS RALLIES HE CRIRICISED PRESIDENT SUKARNO'S POLICIES AND PROMISED THE WEST IRIANS NEW DEAL. AS WELL AS ASKING THEM WHETHER THEY WANTED TO RETURN TO THE UNITED NATIONS, MR. MALIK ASKED THE WEST IRIANS IF THEY HAD ANY COMPLAINTS. HE WAS TOLD OF ESSENTIAL SHORTAGES ON FOOD, CLOTHING AND OTHER GOODS.

MR. MALIK SAID INDONESIA WOULD SOON REJOIN THE UNITED NATIONS, AND WEST IRIAN WOULD THEN BE ENTITLED TO A SPECIAL UNITED NATIONS FUND OF 10,000,000 DOLLARS (ABOUT GBP3,600,000 STERLING) OVER THREE YEARS.
