  • Description

Prisoners in several Italian towns have forces their way onto the roofs of their prisons and thrown missiles at the police in a renewed protest against their conditions. One of the worst demonstrations was at Milan jail in northern Italy.
SYNOPSIS: The Turin prisoners, who started the demonstrations, were forced back into their cells on Friday (3 September) after police had thrown tear gas grenades onto the roof - but here is Milan police have not yet taken the same action.
The prisoners, who have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage, are demanding that prison reforms be put into practice immediately. Revolt has been smouldering in jails throughout Italy this summer to put pressure on the government to implement reforms which have already been approved by parliament. One of the major grievances the Italian prisoners have is that up to half of them are awaiting trial because of the slow pace of the Italian legal system.
These demonstrations are similar to those at Hull prison, England last week, where prisoners complained about the behaviour of prison officers The demonstration caused over two million pounds worth of damage.
Meanwhile in Italy, prisoners at Genes and Catania in Sicily, continue to occupy their prison roof.
