  • Description

MELTING SNOW AND HEAVY RAIN HAVE BROUGHT FLOODS TO PART OF WEST GERMANY. THE RHINE, MAIN AND MOSELLE RIVERS BURST THEIR BANKS, FLOODING TOWNS AND VILLAGES.

HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES WERE DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOMES BY THE FLOODWATERS, WHICH REACHED THEIR PEAK ON CHRISTMAS EVE. TODAY (TUESDAY) THE EFFORTS OF POLICE, TROOPS AND VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD SANDBAG BARRIERS AND DAMS HELPED TO HOLD THE WATER AT BAY AS THE RIVERS BEGAN TO RECEDE.

BUT THE WEST GERMANY GOVERNMENT WARNED OF AN UNEXPECTED THREAT...LAND MINES. RAGING TORRENTS SWEPT ACROSS THE MINEFIELDS THAT LIE BETWEEN EAST AND WEST GERMANY, AND IT'S FEARED THAT MINES COULD HAVE BEEN CARRIED DEEP INTO WEST GERMANY
