    MORE THAN A SCORE OF PACIFISTS STOOD IN POURING RAIN OUTSIDE AN AMERICAN SHIPYARD AT GROTON, CONNECTICUT, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), IN PROTEST AGAINST THE LAUNCHING OF THE NATHAN HALE, AMERICA'S 16TH POLARIS-FIRING NUCLEAR SUBMARINE. THE NATHAN HALE, WAS NAMED BY MRS GEORGE ANDERSON JNR., WIFE OF THE UNITED STATES CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS.

    ON THE SAME DAY AS THE CONNECTICUT LAUNCHING, AMERICAN'S 17TH NUCLEAR-POWERED POLARIS SUBMARINE, THE JOHN ADAMS, WAS LAUNCHED AT THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD IN NEW HAMPSHIRE. BOTH THE NATHAN HALE, AND THE JOHN ADAMS BELONG TO THE ADVANCED LAFAYETTE CLASS. THEY ARE 425 FEET LONG AND DISPLACE 7,000 TONS WHEN FULLY LOADED WITH THE LATEST POLARIS MISSILES CAPABLE OF A RANGE OF MORE THAN 2,800 MILES AFTER BEING FIRED FROM BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE SEA.

    UNDER THE TERMS OF THE NASSAU AGREEMENT REACHED IN DECEMBER, AMERICA HAS AGREED TO SUPPLY BRITAIN WITH POLARIS INSTEAD OF SKYBOLT, THE LAUNCHED-FROM-A-BOMBER MISSILE. AND YESTERDAY, BRITAIN'S SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR, MR. PROFUMO, WHO HAD JUST RETURNED FROM AUSTRALIA SAID HE WAS REASSURED AND CONVINCED THAT THE U.S. AUTHORITIES WOULD DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO ASSIST BRITAIN IN GETTING POLARIS INTO SERVICE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
