  • Description

THE FUTURE OF FORMER CONGOLESE PRIME MINISTER MOISE TSHOMBE WAS STILL HANGING IN THE BALANCE TONIGHT (SATURDAY) AS ALGERIAN PRIME MINISTER HOUARI BOUMEDIENNE DELIBERATED OVER THE RECENT SUPREME COURT DECISION TO RETURN TSHOMBE TO HIS OWN COUNTRY TO FACE THE DEATH PENALTY. AND TONIGHT HIS WIFE, MADAME RUTH TSHOMBE, FLEW TO PARIS IN A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO SAVE HER HUSBAND.

MADAME TSHOMBE WAS UNDERSTOOD TO HAVE MADE THE JOURNEY IN ORDER TO APPEAL TO PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY, OF THE IVORY COAST, AND PRESIDENT LEOPOLD SENGHOR, OF SENEGAL, TO TRY TO STOP THE EXTRADITION OF HER HUSBAND FROM ALGERIA TO KINSHASA.

THE ALGERIAN SUPREME COURT LAST NIGHT AGREED TO A REQUEST FROM PRESIDENT JOSEPH MOBUTU'S GOVERNMENT FOR TSHOMBE'S EXTRADITION. THE DECISION HAS TO BE CONFIRMED BY PRESIDENT BOUMEDIENNE.

BEFORE LEAVING BRUSSELS TO FLY TO PARIS, MADAME TSHOMBE SAID SHE WOULD URGE THE ALGERIAN LEADER -- "NOT TO HAND OVER MY HUSBAND TO HIS EXECUTIONERS". HER SON JEAN WAS WITH MADAME TSHOMBE, AND THEY WERE ACCOMPANIED BY HER HUSBAND'S FORMER CHIEF CABINET SECRETARY, BERNARD MUNONGO.

MADAME TSHOMBE ALSO REITERATED HER DENIAL OF REPORTS FROM JOHANNESBURG THAT SHE HAD OFFERED 70,000 DOLLARS (GBP25,000 STERLING) TO MERCENARIES IN SOUTH AFRICA TO RESCUE HER HUSBAND FROM PRISON IN ALGIERS.
