  • Description

With the country still caught in a political crisis, General Jorge Videla, the leader of a group of senior officers who forced Argentine Army Commander Alberto Laplane to quit, took over the job in his place on Thursday (28 August).

President Maria Estela Peron was forced to accept General videla, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as the new army commander after talks lasting far into the night on Wednesday (27 August).

The decision follows two days of tension, marked by troop movements, an army alert and left wing terrorist bomb attack -- as the five senior officers led by General videla demanded General Laplane's resignation.

President Peron had rejected his resignation. But General Laplane -- the only senior officer who seemed to have some leanings towards the ruling Peronist Party -- finally convinced the President that he would have to go.

President Peron said in a statement later that she considered that General Videla's appointment ended the military crises. But report from buenos Aires said that there was still uncertainty in the Army and the Government about the latest position.

The military crisis was the latest in a series of major confrontations recently in which President Person has been forced to back down.
