  • Description

FOR THE TWENTY-FIRST TIME SINCE 1940, HARROW SCHOOL'S MOST FAMOUS 'OLD BOY', SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL, RETURNED THERE ON NOVEMBER 16 TO TAKE PART IN THE ANNUAL "SONGS".

PROLONGED APPLAUSE FROM THE ASSEMBLED SCHOOL GREETED HIM AS HE ENTERED THE SPEECHROOM WITH LADY CHURCHILL. SIR WINSTON, WHO WILL BE 87 IN TWO WEEKS' TIME, PAUSED TO GAZE REFLECTIVELY AROUND HIM BEFORE TAKING HIS SEAT.

HE SAT WITH HEAD BOWED AS SONGS HE HAD SUNG AS A PUPIL WERE SUNG ONCE AGAIN. SIR WINSTON JOINED HEARTILY IN THE CLAPPING WHEN THE 'NEW BOY'S SOLO' HAD BEEN SUNG.

ON EMERGING FROM THE BUILDING, SIR WINSTON WAS GREETED BY LOUD SHOUTS OF "HARROW, HARROW" FROM HUNDREDS OF BOYS AS HE WALKED SLOWLY DOWN THE STEPS AND ACROSS THE ROAD.

THE SCHOOL'S ANNUAL SONGS WERE TO HAVE BEEN HELD ON OCTOBER 24 BUT WERE POSTPONED AS SIR WINSTON WAS SUFFERING FROM A COLD.
