    Background: CALCUTTA TURNED OUT FOR THE POLLING BOOTHS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) ON THE FIFTH DAY OF THE INDIAN GENERAL ELECTIONS. ABOUT 20 MILLION VOTERS IN WEST BENGAL WERE CHOOSING THEIR REPRESENTATIVES FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.

    ALTOGETHER 57 MILLION OF THE TOTAL INDIAN ELECTORATE OF 250 MILLION WERE VOTING YESTERDAY IN THE WEEK-LONG ELECTIONS. THEY TURNED OUT IN WEST BENGAL, BIHAR, HARYANA, MYSORE, PUNJAB, UTTAR PRADESH AND THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT-ADMINISTERED TERRITORIES OF DELHI AND CHANDIGARH. CALCUTTA LAST THURSDAY WAS THE SCENE OF SOME VIOLENCE. ONE PERSON WAS REPORTED KILLED AND SEVERAL PEOPLE INJURED IN CLASHES IN THE SUBURB OF BELGHARIA.
