  • Description

BRUNEI, A SMALL INDEPENDENT STATE NESTLING BETWEEN SARAWAK AND SABAH (NORTH BORNEO) ON THE WEST COAST AND ABOUT 100 MILES FROM THE INDONESIAN TERRITORY, REMAINS QUIET AS THE DISPUTE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND INDONESIA CONTINUES.

BRUNEI, WHICH ELECTED TO REMAIN OUTSIDE OF THE FEDERATION OF MALAYSIA WHEN IT WAS FORMED IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR, WAS ROCKED BY AN INTERNAL REVOLUTION IN DECEMBER 1962.

THE REVOLT WAS QUICKLY QUELLED AND SHE IS NOW UNDER BRITISH PROTECTION. THE POLITICAL SITUATION HAS REMAINED SINCE THE REBELLION. ITS SMALL POPULATION IS CONSIDERED VULNERABLE TO EXTREMIST PROPAGANDA.

TWO MAJOR ISSUES HAVE KEPT BRUNEI OUT OF MALAYSIA. FIRST ITS WELL KNOWN THAT THE SULTAN, SIR OMAR ALI SAIFFUDIN, WANTED SOME ASSURANCE THAT HE WOULD HAVE SOME PRECEDENCE OVER THE SULTANS OF THE OTHER STATES WHEN THE KING OF MALAYSIA IS ELECTED BY THE SULTANS IN THREE YEARS TIME. THIS THE SULTANS HAVE OPPOSED AND THE MALAYSIAN PREMIER, TUNKO ABDUL RAHMAN, HAS RESISTED.

AND SECONDLY, THE SULTAN'S ATTITUDE IMMEDIATELY HARDENED WITH THE PROSPECT OF LIFE OF THE BRUNEI OIL FIELD BEING EXTENDED. AT THE MOMENT, ITS PRODUCTION IS FALLING RAPIDLY.

A MALAY SCHOOL SITUATED TWO MILES OUTSIDE THE TOWN AND SURROUNDED BY RUBBER TREES AND UNDERGROWTH, NOW HOUSES THE BRITISH ARMY HEADQUARTERS AND TROOPS.

THE BEAUTIFUL MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR MOSQUE, NAMED AFTER THE SULTAN, IS A SYMBOL OF BRUNEI'S ADHERENCE TO THE ISLAMIC FAITH. MILLIONS OF GOLD LEAVES HAVE BEEN USED IN THE STRUCTURED WITH THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE DOME BEING 146 FEET.

NEARBY THE MOSQUE IS THE FAMOUS KAMPONG AYER OR WATER VILLAGE --
DWELLING PLACE FOR ABOUT 25,000 OF THE 83,000 POPULATION. THE REST LIVE IN MODERN HOMES AND FLATS.

BRUNEI COMPRISES AN AREA OF 2,226 SQUARE MILES WITH A COAST-LINE OF ABOUT ONE HUNDRED MILES. THE COUNTRY IS VERY RUGGED. THE MAIN SOURCE OF THE STATE'S WEALTH COMES FROM THE SERIA OILFIELDS. SHE IS ONE OF THE RICHEST PRODUCERS OF PETROLEUM IN THE COMMONWEALTH.
