  • Description

SIXTEEN OF THE TWENTY FOREIGN DELEGATIONS AT THE TWELFTH WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST ATOM AND HYDROGEN BOMBS WITHDREW FROM THE MEETING IN TOKYO ON WEDNESDAY (3 AUGUST).

THE WALK-OUT WAS A PROTEST AGAINST THE PRESENCE AT THE CONFERENCE OF REPRESENTATIVE OF THE WORLD DEMOCRATIC YOUTH FEDERATION, AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATION WITH HEADQUARTERS IN BUDAPEST.

THE ORGANISERS OF THE CONFERENCE, THE JAPAN COUNCIL AGAINST ATOM AND HYDROGEN BOMB AND THE JAPANESE COMMUNIST PARTY, REFUSED TO BAR THE YOUTH FEDERATION REPRESENTATIVES, AND THE WALK-OUT FOLLOWED. ONLY DELEGATIONS FROM DENMARK, FRANCE AND RUMANIA, AND MOST OF THE AMERICA DELEGATION, REMAINED.

THERE WAS DISAGREEMENT IN THE AIR AT THE CONFERENCE FROM THE START, WHEN THE JAPANESE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE REFUSED TO ALLOW DELEGATIONS FROM NORTH VIETNAM AND THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA TO ENTER THE COUNTRY.

IT CAME INTO THE OPEN WHEN THE YOUTH FEDERATION REPRESENTATIVES SAID THEY ALSO WANTED TO ATTEND A SECOND CONFERENCE AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS ORGANISED BY THE JAPANESE SOCIALIST PARTY.
