    MALAYSIA'S MOSLEM-DOMINATED ARMED FORCES NOW HAS A CHINESE BRIGADIER GENERAL. LEONG SIEW MENG IS CHIEF SIGNAL OFFICER. TODAY (SATURDAY), HE TOOK THE SALUTE AT THE PASSING OUT PARADE OF 29 RECRUITS FOR THE SIGNAL REGIMENT. IT WAS HELD AT THE SIGNAL REGIMENT'S PARADE GROUND, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, IN KUALA LUMPUR.

    IT WAS BRIGADIER GENERAL LEONG'S FIRST OCCASION TO REVIEW THE PASSING OUT PARADE SINCE HIS APPOINTMENT AS CHIEF SIGNAL OFFICER IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS YEAR. HE SUCCEEDED A BRITON, COLONEL SYLVESTER BRADLEY, WHO HELD THE POST SINCE AUGUST 1967.

    BRIGADIER-GENERAL LEONG WAS MET ON ARRIVAL AT THE SCHOOL BY THE COMMANDING OFFICER OF THE SIGNAL REGIMENT, LIEUTENANT COLONEL OOI TEONG AUN, ALSO A CHINESE.

    THIS IS THE SECOND INTAKE OF THE SIGNAL REGIMENT'S RECRUITS TO HAVE COMPLETED THEIR 10-WEEK TRAINING IN KUALA LUMPUR, WHERE A SIGNAL SCHOOL HAS BEEN SET UP FOR THE PURPOSE. ABOUT 12 TO 15 BRITISH OFFICERS FROM THE SCHOOL OF SIGNALS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, HAVE BEEN SECONDED TO THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT TO TRAIN LOCAL RECRUITS.

    THE BEST RECRUIT AWARD SENT TO ABDUL RAHIM BIN DAUD, AGED 18.
