Background: Jordan's King Hussein flew into Damascus on Sunday for high level talks with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad. The talks between the two leaders centred upon the latest developments in the Middle East, including the progress between Egypt and israel in their peace treaty.

SYNOPSIS: President Assad and King Hussein met to try and iron out a joint plan concerning the continuing peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Both leaders are prominent within the Arab league; the organization which began the economic boycott of Egypt.

However, Syria has also had its share of economic trouble. Earlier this month the United States Senate refused forty-five million dollars (U.S.) in aid to Syria. One of the Senators who voted for the sanctions said that Syria was the "main opponent of peace with israel and the principal supporter of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO)."
It is also believed that President Assad briefed King Hussein on his recent visit to Moscow.

The two leaders will meet again next month in Tunis, during the Arab League meeting there. King Hussein returned to Jordan on Sunday (21 October); today (23 October) he will visit Baghdad for meetings with Iraqi officials.
