  • Description

THE 1965 ENGLISH DERBY WAS WON AT EPSOM TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BY A FRENCH HORSE, "SEA BIRD 11", RIDDEN BY AN AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY, PAT GLENNON. THERE WERE 22 FINAL ACCEPTORS IN THE RACE, WHICH CARRIED A FIRST PRIZE OF GBP65,000.

THE DERBY, ENGLAND'S GREATEST CLASSIC, WAS RUN OVER ONE MILES AND FOUR FURLONGS. SEA BIRD, THE FAVOURITE AT 7/4, WON BY TWO LENGTHS, WITH ONE AND A HALF LENGTHS SEPARATING SECOND AND THIRD. IT WAS THE 186TH DERBY, AND SEA BIRD WAS THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE FAVOURITE TO WIN THE RACE.

SEA BIRD WAS RIDDEN SUPERBLY BY 38-YEAR-OLD PAT GLENNON, OF ADELAIDE. DRAWING NEAR TO THE WINNING POST, THE FRENCH CHESTNUT WAS SO FAR AHEAD THAT GLENNON WAS ABLE TO EASE HIM UP. MEADOW COURT WAS ALWAYS AMONG THE LEADERS, BUT IT WAS NOT UNTIL THE FINAL FURLONG THAT THE IRISH COLT SHOWED THE STAMINA TO KEEP HIS RIVALS OUT OF SECOND PLACE.
