  • Description

Members of the Council of Arab Economic Unity met in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Saturday (11 December) to discuss trade and economic development projects.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place at the head-quarters of the Arab League. The Council of Arab Economic Unity was formed by the League in 1957 and has 13 members. The delegates at the Cairo meeting were addressed by the Council's Secretary-General, Dr. Abdul Aal al-Saghban -- on the left -- and Kuwait's Minister of Finance, Mr. Abdulrahman el-Outeiky.

The Council members are responsible for the implementation of decisions taken by its various sub-committees. The main aim is to unify and integrate the economies of the various countries, through a common policy. The Council charter calls for the relaxation of trade traffic between the members and the freedom of movement of people for residence and employment. Arab joint companies have been formed in some industries for closer co-operation on problems of production and marketing.

Dr. Saghban stressed the importance of the Council's work. Most countries have been suffering economic recession in recent years and there have been calls from the Third World for a new international economic structure. A number of leaders from developing countries have said that the Third Would should unify its effort to achieve its aims.
