  • Description

FIGHTING IS STILL GOING ON AROUND THE DONG XOAI AREA, ABOUT 60 MILES (96 KMS) NORTH OF SAIGON, AFTER ONE OF THE BLOODIEST BATTLES IN THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN THE VIET CONG AND THE GOVERNMENT FORCES.

THE FIGHTING BEGAN EARLY ON THURSDAY WHEN AN ESTIMATED TWO BATTALIONS OF VIET CONG SEIZED AN AIR STRIP NEAR THE TOWN OF DONG XOAI. FROM THERE THEY POURED A HEAVY BOMBARDMENT OF 60 MM AND 81 MM MORTAR FIRE ONTO THE COMMUNITY AND TWO COMPOUNDS. THE COMPOUNDS WERE MANNED BY A 400-STRONG DEFENCE FORCE, INCLUDING CIVILIAN IRREGULAR DEFENCE GROUPS, REGIONAL FORCES, A U.S. ADVISORY GROUP AND AN ARTILLERY PLATOON.

AN HOUR AFTER THE INITIAL ATTACK, THE VIET CONG LAUNCHED A STRONG ASSAULT ON THE WALLS AND THE OUTER DEFENCES OF THE COMPOUNDS. THE DEFENCE FORCE ON THE NORTH AND WEST WALLS HELD FIRM, MANY OF THEM DYING AT THEIR POSTS. THE UNIT AT THE EAST FELL BACK. THE COMPOUND HELD OUT UNTIL THE ARTILLERY PLATOON EXHAUSTED THEIR AMMUNITION. THEN THE AREA WAS OVERRUN BY VIET CONG. HEAVY LOSSES WERE SUFFERED BY BOTH SIDES, AND INCLUDED CIVILIANS IN THE TOWN. GOVERNMENT LOSSES WERE PROVISIONALLY SET AT 108 KILLED, 46 WOUNDED AND 126 MISSING, BUT THE FIGURE IS EXPECTED TO BE FINALLY MUCH HIGHER. FIGURES FOR AMERICAN LOSSES ARE CONFLICTING, BUT TWO DEAD ARE CONFIRMED WITH 13 WOUNDED AND 14 OTHERS MISSING.

BY 0900 HOURS ON THURSDAY, A RELIEF INFANTRY BATTALION WAS FLOWN INTO THE AREA. THIS BATTALION, NUMBERING ABOUT 300 MEN, WAS FLOWN BY HELICOPTER TO WITHIN TWO MILES OF DONG XOAI. IMMEDIATELY IT WAS CAUGHT IN DEADLY CROSSFIRE FROM THE VIET CONG AND A PITCHED BATTLE DEVELOPED. CONTACT WAS LOST WITH THE BATTALION, AND IT IS SO FAR PRESUMED THAT ALMOST ALL THE BATTALION WAS WIPED OUT. TWO U.S. HELICOPTERS WERE SHOT DOWN.

SHORTLY AFTER MIDDAY, THE REMNANTS OF THE DEFENDING FORCE IN THE COMPOUND SENT OUT THEIR LAST MESSAGE: "RECEIVING HEAVY MORTAR FIRE." THREE HOURS LATER THE 52 RANGER BATTALION, ABOUT 300 STRONG WAS LANDED NEAR THE TOWN FROM HELICOPTERS. THEIR FIRST ATTACK ON THE VIET CONG-HELD COMPOUNDS WAS REPULSED, BUT AFTER HEAVY AIR SUPPORT, THE SECOND ATTACK, AT DUSK, DROVE THE VIET CONG FORCES BACK. FIGHTING CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT, AND BY MORNING ON FRIDAY THE LAST OF THE VIET CONG FORCES WERE DRIVEN OUT.
