    After twelve months of compulsory service with the German Bundeswehr, those born in 1937 are now due for release from the army and are now in the process of returning to civil life.

    There are some, of course, who have volunteered to sign on for a further term of service. Estimated at 25 percent of those due for release, they can sign for another 6 months, 2 years, or 5 years; and as volunteers they will receive a higher rate of pay.

    Bluecher Barracks at Hemer is one of the West German demob. depots. Here military clothing and equipment is returned, and the young men equipped for their return to civil life.

    For those who decide to stay on there is a handshake and a review from the commander, also a brass band to brighten up the proceedings.
