  • Description

Henry Throne and David Fellin -- one singing and the other dancing a jig -- were rescued early today. They were lifted slowly from the chamber 300 feet underground where they were trapped for two weeks. The men are unharmed.

Throne started up at 1:50 A.M.and reached the surface at 2:07 AM.He later said the 17 minute trip was "The best ride I ever had." Fellin started up at 2:33 AM and reached the surface at 2:41 AM.

Both men were brought up in a special safety harness, resembling that worn by a parachutist.Mine workers hauled them by hand afraid to trust the delicate job to machiners. Both men were taken from the rescue shaft to an emergency hospital tent; then flown by helicopter to the Hazleton Hospital.

Both men are in good condition, apparently feeling well, and cheerful.Doctors will keep them in the hospital for a week, principally to carry out a series of medical tests and aimed at developing survival techniques.

Shortly after the rescue, workers began drilling a 12-inch hole towards Louis Bova, the third miner.Fellin says he feels sure that Bova is still alive.Bova has not been heard from for seven days.Earlier attempts to drill communications holes to the pocket where he is lying were unsuccessful.
