Background: Dr Adenauer, the West German Chancellor, opened the 10th National Conference of the Christian Democratic Party in Cologne April 24.
On behalf of the C.D.U. Executive Committee, Dr Adenauer welcomed the delegates and proposed a list of member for election to the Conference Presidium: - (SOF in German) "Ladies and Gentlemen, unless there are any objections we can now proceed to vote on the complete list of names. I believe there are no objections - at least, owing to the floodlights I can see no objectors (laughter) - in which case I assume that you agree with me and we can now all cast our votes."
Some 400 delegates, including Dr Erhard the Economics Minister, and Herr Strauss the Defence Minister, packed the city's Exhibition Hall. During the three-day conference they will discuss the party campaign in the Sept 17 elections for Chancellorship.
The delegate's mood is one of confidence. There seems little doubt at present that Dr Adenauer, who is 85, will gain his fourth successive general election victory. No seriously controversial issues divide the country, and the Government's economic survey, published to coincide with the conference, provides evidence of continuing prosperity.
Herr Willy Brandt, 47, Chief Burgomaster of West Berlin, the Socialist rival for the Chancellorship, will launch his party's programme April 28.
