  • Description

Virtually all flights by European airlines in and out of London Airport were cancelled tonight (Monday), leaving 8,000 passengers stranded.

The cutback followed violent clashes between police and striking airport workers. About 2,000 ground services employees are staging an unofficial strike in protest at a new contract between the Spanish Iberian Airways and General Aviation Services, a Canadian firm set up to concentrate ground service work.

The airport men claim the new contract would mean less work for them.

SYNOPSIS: A strike of ground servicing personnel at London's Heathrow airport caused the cancellation of nearly all Monday night flights to and from the airport by European airlines. The strikers are protesting against a contract between a Canadian ground service organisation and the Spanish Iberian airline.

At the centre of the storm - an Iberian jet. An estimated 8,000 passengers were stranded in the various airport terminal buildings.

At one stage passengers on incoming flights were reduced to unloading their own baggage, before the clampdown became complete.

The demonstration by the airport workers rapidly turned into a bitter clash as police tried to prevent the attacking employees and property of the Canadian ground service firm. Windows were smashed and trucks damaged.

Finally police and union officials managed to restore order. But there was no sing of an and to the dispute.
