  • Description

Togo's new naval base has been inaugurated by President Gnassingbe Eyadema in the capital of Lome.

SYNOPSIS: The inauguration took place on Friday (27 April) before a large crowd of officials from the Diplomatic Corps; the Civil Service and the Armed Forces.

The ceremony took place to the accompaniment of a 21 gun salute as President Eyadema cut the tape across the entrance to the base. Then came an inspection of the base with the Base Commander Captain Geng leading the way.

President Eyadema inspected the Togolese patrol vessels Kara and Mono. Another vessel in port to receive the President's attention was the Gabonese patrol vessel, El Hadj Omar Bongo.

The inauguration was the final ceremony marking the 19th anniversary of Independence from France. Togo maintains an armed force of two thousand five hundred members. The Air Force and the Navy are small but expanding. Since Independence, the country has been ruled by the Military, although President Eyadema has made several promises of a return to civilian rule.
