    THE MAMMOTH KOBADAK PROJECT TO CONTROL THE WATERS OF THE GANGES, FIRST INAUGURATED NEARLY TEN YEARS AGO, IS NEARING COMPLETION. RECENTLY THE GOVERNOR OF EAST PAKISTAN SWITCHED ON THE POWER AT THE PUMP HOUSE IN A CEREMONY ATTENDED BY THOMAS POWER, RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UNITED NATIONS TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE BOARD, AND G.G. ROBERTS, HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR CANADA IN PAKISTAN. ESTIMATED TO COST MORE THAN 190 MILLION RUPEES THE PROJECT IS TO IRRIGATE, DRAIN, AND PROTECT THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE FROM RIVER FLOODING AND TIDAL INVASION. AN EXTENSIVE CANAL SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH WILL IRRIGATE 2,750,000 MILLION ACRES.

    THIS PROJECT, PART OF AN EXTENSIVE RIVER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME, PROMISES A LARGE INCREASE IN FOOD PRODUCTION WITH INCREASED CROPPING.
