    FOUR PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND ELEVEN OTHERS INJURED IN AN EXPLOSION IN LAGOS ON SUNDAY NIGHT. POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR THE SABOTEURS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BLAST. THEY SAY THAT THE CAPITAL'S POLICE HEADQUARTERS WAS THE TARGET.

    THE BLAST OCCURRED WHEN A CAR PACKED WITH EXPLOSIVES BLEW UP IN A PETROL FILLING STATION ACROSS THE ROAD FROM POLICE HEADQUARTERS. AN ADJACENT HOUSE WAS DESTROYED AND FOUR OF ITS OCCUPANTS -- INCLUDING TWO CHILDREN -- WERE KILLED. SOME OF THE ELEVEN PEOPLE INJURED ARE CRITICALLY ILL IN HOSPITAL. THE EXPLOSION ALSO WRECKED THE FILLING STATION AND RIPPED WINDOWS OUT OF THE FIVE STOREY-POLICE HEADQUARTERS BUILDING.

    POLICE SAY THAT A MAN DROVE A CAR UP TO POLICE HEADQUARTERS ON SUNDAY NIGHT BUT WAS TURNED BACK WHEN HE COULD NOT PROVE HIS IDENTITY. HE REVERSED THE VEHICLE INTO THE FILLING STATION AND FLED JUST BEFORE IT EXPLODED. SOON AFTER A SECOND EXPLOSION RIPPED THROUGH A GARAGE IN THE SUBURBS INJURING THREE PEOPLE.
