Background: Herr Otto Grotewohl, East German Premier, and his wife, were filmed by Visnews during a three hour visit to India's giant hydro-electric scheme, Bhakra Dam at Nangal. herr Grotewohl arrived in India Jan 12 for a five day state visit.
As the East German Premier was conducted round the project he repeatedly remarked "I am thoroughly fascinated the Bhakra Dam is a symbol of the new fait towards which the whole Indian nation is moving".
Together with the Nangal Dam power house and a canal system, the Bhakra Dam formed the Bhakra Nangal project, regarded for its almost unlimited potentialities of irrigation and power distribution, as the symbol of the 'New India'. Highest in the world, the massive 740 ft high concrete dam structure will hold back the waters of a 65 square mile lake, providing irrigation for about 10 million acres of soil. Total power output of the whole project, to be finished by March 1960, will be nearly one million kilowatts.
