Despite a forecast of scattered showers, about 8 thousand Bay Area residents turned out Saturday at the Santa Clara county fairgrounds to experience off road motorcycling in a unique program sponsored by Yamaha International Corp.

Youngsters like Julie Griffith, a 9 1/2 yr old from San Jose were given helmets, motorcycles, and lots of encouragement as they took off, many for the first time.

Of course the main attraction of the day was the High School Motocross Championship. Many of the prep stars were moving very slowly as they became mired in a sea of mud. It was mud flying everywhere covering the riders and their machines within minutes after the start of the races.

Motocross has been called the second most demanding sport next to soccer, and requires a rider to develop skill and techniques to navigate the course, but most important, stamina.

Also on hand were the moto-bikes. A miniature race track was set up for the bikes, with the completion divided by weight and age. The youngsters really take their racing seriously, using bikes that are set up with front and rear suspension, they can jump, slide, and negotiate the bumpy courses.

This two day event is sponsored by the Yamaha International Corp.
